Call for Ride + Stride 2010 - Saturday 11th September

Cyclists and walkers are reminded that the Royal County of Berkshire Churches Trust's annual charity
Ride + Stride event is on Saturday September 11th

Last year some 300 cyclists and walkers raised over £20,000 but this year the organisers hope to increase this by 25%.
Participants are free to tailor their own route making the event ideal for riders and walkers of all levels of experience. To participate contact Clive Betteridge, Berkshire County Coordinator (email : berkshire@rideandstrideuk.org) who will provide you with sponsorship forms and details of the churches in Berkshire.

Amnesty International Prisoners of Conscience

Filep Karma
Filep is, as you know, one of our Amnesty International Prisoners of Conscience, imprisoned for 15 years for taking part in a peaceful demonstration. He is now in intensive care in hospital, and in severe pain. Please pray for him.

Update on prisoners

Filep urgently needs an operation, and we are trying to find a way of funding this, as the authorities refuse to do so. I am happy to take any donations towards this, and will pass them on. We can't guarantee that Filep will get his operation, but at least the authorities will see that people care enough to give.
Please pray for both our prisoners of conscience.

Filep Appeal

Contact has been made with Filep, who is very depressed as he feels that the authorities want him to die in prison. However, enough money has been collected for his operation, and everything now depends on the Human Rights Commission persuading the government to let him go to Jakarta to have it.
Thank you for all your generosity: we gave a total of £310 to the operation fund. Now we must keep on praying!

Good news!
Our prisoner of conscience Filep has managed to get a message out of prison, saying 'Thank you to Christ Church, Reading, for supporting us.' This means that at least some of our messages have been received.
Thank you to everyone who signed the petition Sunday.

Good news!

Many of you signed a petition to ask that our prisoner of conscience Filep Karma might have an operation that he urgently needs, and you also gave generously towards the cost of the operation.
I have now heard that the Indonesian Government has relented and agreed that Filep can have the operation, which should take place in the next two weeks or so.
Please pray that it is successful, and that Filep and Yusak might be freed. Thank you for all your support.

A British woman, Linda Carty, is on death row in a Texas prison. She did not have a fair trial and is almost certainly innocent. A film of her by the British film maker Steve Humphries is very moving - you can see some of it on www.reprieve.org.uk/save lindacarty
There is also a petition on this website, which you can sign online. Please do so if you can.
